Perry is a Chicago native, birthed to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mom in both of the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. The parents of her were not keen to let her take on acting roles until she was an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry said that she was too nervous to be an actor during high school, but started doing shows in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, moved into New York in search of TV roles. She landed small parts in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness led her to California to find theater work. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway with her mother. In the year 2015, she was with Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer-winning drama Anna Christie. The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. Perry was a part of nine episodes of ABC's show The Family. Her father played her character in the ABC drama Scandal. In the same year, her character was cast a young character of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger model of the mother's character. Despite her family link to the character she received the role via an audition.
